imperial

it is impossible to show this plant in all its glory, it is beyond impressive - it is almost as tall as me, each 'blossom' is lilac-blue, they seem to float above the earth... I bought one bulb, on a whim, in a supermarket, i didn't even know what plant 'Eryngium' was supposed to be, last year it had only leaves (i didn't know it was biannual then, so I was disappointed, though the leaves were very pretyy, a rosette of leaves). and this year!!! i have followed it breathlessly, trying to imagine what shape it would take, I couldn't have imagined this!
i want to try to collect the seeds, i want more of it...

(Eryngium - scai vanat)

these were already in the garden when we moved, i can't find another better word than imperial... Yucca, in flower... (behind a small walnut tree which needs to be moved, if this can be done, this autumn)

both eryngium & yucca - snail proof!

the true queen of the night

a rare case where the romanian name is more beautiful, regina noptii, Queen of the Night (Nicotiana alata). I only love this old type, pure white, extremely fragrant, I have seen one can have many colourful cultivars these days, but they have no fragrance. and there is nothing like the combination of white and perfume in the garden at dusk...

daughters of the wind

Anemone coronaria de Caen
(before and after the petunias have taken over :-)
they flowered first in the second half of may, to my surprise they are showing some blossoms again. I am thrilled to see anemones for the first time, after having dreamt so much about them!

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Greek ἀνεμώνη (anemōnē) means 'daughter of the wind'.  The Metamorphoses of Ovid tells that the plant was created by the goddess Venus when she sprinkled nectar on the blood of her dead lover Adonis.

Erschütterer -: Anemone,
die Erde ist kalt, ist nichts,
da murmelt deine Krone
ein Wort des Glaubens, des Lichts.

Der Erde ohne Güte,
der nur die Macht gerät,
ward deine leise Blüte
so schweigend hingesät.

Erschütterer -: Anemone,
du trägst den Glauben, das Licht,
den einst der Sommer als Krone
aus großen Blüten flicht.

(Anemone - Gottfried Benn)

Sublime mover -: Anemone,
the earth is cold, is nothing,
your crown alone murmurs
a word of hope, of light.

Into a world without value
which only power directs,
your gentle blooms
 are sown in silence.

Sublime mover -: Anemone,
you bear the hope, the light,
which one day, from heavy blossom,
the summer will weave into a crown.

salvia lyrata

Salvia lyrata 'Purple Knockout', grown from seeds - they are still very small and yet they have already produced a tiny blossoms spike... I ordered these by mistake, as I wanted a true sage, but i like it because I love purple plants :-) and it is tough and drought-resistant, I can't wait to see it get a bit bigger... oh, and easy to grow from seed, i have about 10 little ones!

triumphantly red

the magic of chance

more petunias, they are irresistible! this has turned into a wonderful combination, with the tall huge pompon poppies, nothing like i had planned, but i think i will bow to chance this time. and these petunias are intoxicatingly fragrant at night, i am in love :-) to my surprise, they even last long in vase, and they keep blooming even cut!

uninvited

my research has shown this is Ornithogalum umbellatum, the so-called Star of Bethlehem. I am very excited, i think it is very pretty, but i don't know how to multiply it. I have a vague recollection i saw it last summer too, in this place, but just one, as it is now. if it is a bulb, it should multiply with time, though...

sedums yaaay

uninvited

these petunias have appeared out of the blue - after i had the soil tilted last autumn, i wanted the lilies-of-the-valley removed and had planted some alliums and irises there... the seeds must have waited in the soil for many years! i couldn't bring myself to destroy them, but they are very vigorous and tend to overwhelm everything - though i must admit that they look pretty in the dark, the white is almost glowing...
